1989: Gambling Starts Its Return to Deadwood
On this date, April 11, 1989, Deadwood residents voted to legalize gambling in their historic community.
Deadwood Favors Gambling
Voters overwhelmingly approved a return to legalized gambling Tuesday in this historic Black Hills town, where Wild Bill Hickock was shot to death in a frontier card game. City leaders hope games of chance will revive Deadwood's economy. The measure to legalize poker, blackjack and slot machines received 690 votes, or 75 percent, in favor to 112 votes against. The measure needed 60 percent to pass.

At the gallows, McCall calmly mounted the platform with Fr. Daxacher, and while the prisoner knelt with the priest, his legs and arms were tied. When he rose, he kissed a proffered crucifix and the black hood was drawn over his head.
McCall asked the marshal for an additional moment of prayer, after which the noose was placed around his neck. "Draw it tighter, Marshal," the doomed man supposedly said. Then, at precisely 10 minutes after 10 a.m. , the trap was sprung. Faulk's story continued:
"Twelve minutes after the drop fell, Drs. D. F. Etter and J. M. Miller were admitted to the interior of the gallows and examined the body, pronouncing life extinct. McCall's head was inclined in a drooping position toward his breast, his hands were clenched and blue, in one of which was still grasped the crucifix.

Legendary Deadwood News: HBO Deadwood Continues Tainted Portrayal of the Real Deadwood; Cover Your Ears as HBO Deadwood Scheduled for 3rd Season
By Jeanne Prentice
Fearful that foul language, whores and nudity haven't been enough to keep a viewing audience, HBO is scrambling to keep HBO Deadwood alive. In hopes to draw from a different viewing population, David Milch's HOB Deadwood is now on target to introduce a gay agenda to the mix. Deadwood (HBO) will now premiere its third season in June and adds Brian Cox as Jack Langrishe, a gay and eccentric theater owner who tries to bring culture to the mean streets of Deadwood. Proudparenting.com boasts of the addition to the drama series as it includes LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered) portrayals. . . .
And it gets worse from here in its hatred of HBO's "Deadwood." Usual B.S. about swearing, nudity, etc. Go figure. Pearls before swine (or Swearengen), I suppose.

No! "Deadwood" Third Season Premiere Pushed Back to June '06
![]()
&^%$# HBO executives! To accomodate a Tom Hanks mini-series on HBO, the cable network is pushing back the third season premiere of "Deadwood" from March to June. I would like to say what I think Al Swearengen would say, but it would violate my rule against profanity on the site.

A New "Deadwood" Blog by Those Who "Live" There
Hey fellow "Deadwoodians!" There is a new blog produced by members of the "background" cast of HBO's "Deadwood."
These are the folks who help populate the sets, do the stunts, and provide all the wonderful authenticity to the show.
The site is Deadwood Blog and here is the link: http://deadwood.blog.com/ They discuss production on the show, what cast members are doing in outside projects, and so forth. They won't give out insider information but hope to be able to provide some approved tidbits from time to time.
It is an attractive site that I'm sure you'll enjoy checking from time to time.
The good folks at Deadwood Blog have also added a link to Not the Deadwood Pioneer on their website. Thank you very much!
A "Deadwoodian" With Too Much Time on Their Hands?
This comes from the Los Angeles Daily News:
All aboard for model-railroad fans' open house eventGarden railroaders to open up their tracks
CASTAIC - A tiny Al Swearengen leans over the balcony of the Gem Saloon, except this bar isn't anywhere near Melody Ranch, home of his HBO series "Deadwood."
This tyrant lords over a miniature homage to the series by train fan Debbie Goetz, who, with her husband, Dan, has built the Western town into their 140-foot backyard garden railroad.
Darn, I love "Deadwood" too, but I'm not out making "tiny Al Swearengens" or "miniature Calamity James" or even "diminutive Trixies."
