I wish I could tell you I meant for this photo to turn out this way, but that would not be the truth. Typically in my sports photography, I'm trying to stop the action as sharply as possible, not blur it. I get enough unintentional blur as it is from poorly lit gyms and too weak of a flash unit on my camera.
But I think in this photo, the blur works pretty well. My daughter Sarah, the maroon gal in the middle, is mostly stopped and waiting to receive the just thrown basketball from an unseen teammate. Meanwhile, the other players swirl around her playing defense. I think it captures the critical moment of the ball being thrown and the controlled chaos that is basketball. I believe I took the photo in 2005 and it is of a C game between Harrisburg and Sioux Falls Christian.

This is a painful but poignant photo for me of my daughter Sarah sitting on the bench last year during a freshman high school basketball game. I can tell she is very unhappy that she is not in the game. I know the feeling, as I spent a lot of my basketball career sitting next to the coach rather than on the floor where I wanted to be. But this is as much a part of sports as hitting the winning basket at the buzzer--maybe even more so.
Yeah, I wish it were a little sharper but I think it still works.

This is a photo of Emma Johnson (Harrisburg, right) and a player from Deuel in a freshman girls basketball tournament in January 2005 in Dell Rapids. I coached Emma and my daughter Sarah from second through eighth grades. I particularly like the direction and intensity of Emma's and the other girl's eyes and their arms touching in preparation for a tussle over a rebound during a free throw.
