elevator fire 2002.jpg

 Don't panic!

This is not an out of control fire but a controlled burn of the old grain elevator in Harrisburg a couple summers ago.  It was one of the biggest deals to hit the Garden Spot of Lincoln County in many years.  It turned into a major fire fighting exercise for the region's fire fighters.  Plus, it was really cool to watch.   I kept yelling "fire, fire, huh, huh, fire" like Beavis and Butthead.

great wall rush hour.jpg

I took this photo in August 1983 while I was studying and traveling in China.  This is a traffic jam at one of the turrets on the Great Wall of China.  It figures the guy going the wrong way through the throng is a Westerner.  I also like the gal with the enormous white hat in the lower 1/2 of the frame.

syrian gate.jpg

This photo is more of a photo of an oddity than a great photo.  It is a photo I took of a gate into Damascus, Syria in November 2003.  The cameo is of Syria's late President Hafez al-Assad.  I thought the gate bore a striking resemblance to the Mayor Dave Munson gate in Sioux Falls at the entrance to Phillips-to-the-Falls.

yankton arched window vert.jpg

This is an arched window in one of the great old buildings in downtown Yankton, SD.  (It is the Johnson, Heidepriem, et al law office).  I took the photo in June 2005.  It is not so much a great photo as a photo of a great building with some wonderful flourishes.

top of meridian bridge cropped.jpg

While no longer functional, this is a photo of one of the lifts on the Meridian Bridge over the MIssouri River at Yankton.  I think the angular shapes are set off by the big circular flywheels at the top of the lift.  I took the photo in the Summer of 2005.

great wall blowin' chunks vert.jpg

This is another photo from my archives from the Summer of 1983.  Is this Chinese fellow blowing chunks at the Great Wall of China?  It kind of looks that way.  However, I think he was merely looking through the space in the Great Wall to look at the ground below.  I thought it was funny 23 years ago when I took the photo and I still think it is funny.

grain elevator lader spiral.jpg This is one of my favorite photos.  This is a shot of a ladder and the "protective" cage that goes around it on the grain elevator in Harrisburg.  I like the concentric circles leading to the round opening at the top and the wonderfully blue South Dakota sky, all contrasting with the corrugated steel on the elevator.

March 18

The composition of this photo could obviously be better, with an ugly pole in the shot.  But this is a great turret on a old building on US 75 in Auburn, Nebraska.  It is literally a grab shot with a cheap digital camera I carry in my car.  I was stopped at the light heading north from a trip to Topeka, Kansas.  I've seen this design on some other buildings in southeast Nebraska and northeast Kansas.
