great wall wide fixed.jpg
I've included this photo for a couple of reasons.  First, it is obviously of the Great Wall of China north of Beijing, which I visited in the summer of 1983.  What is interesting is all the people walking along the wall.  The photo itself is merely ok at best--over exposed, washed out, and a bad, bald sky that didn't help matters.

Oh, and I opened my camera back, exposing my slide film to daylight.  Pretty dumb, considering at the time I figured I'd probably not make it back to the Great Wall anytime soon--which has been the case. The original slide is nearly white from overexposure.

Which brings me to my second point.  Thanks to the even rather rudimentary tools in Photoshop Elements 2.0 that I use, I was able to rescue the photo over twenty years later so it is actually viewable.  In the hands of a professional like my freind Dawnne Gee, he might even be able to make it better still (and a better still).  Thank goodness for digital photography!

Believe it or not, this is a modern take on a traditional Chinese art form--ok, well, sort of.  Trees, mountains, and fog are major elements in ancient Chinese painting.  I took this photo in Huang Shan (Yellow Mountains) in south central China in the summer of 1983.  I was on a trail composed of stone steps cut through miles and miles of mountains and bamboo forest.  It was always foggy and if it wasn't foggy it was raining.  You'll note the power lines in the lower right of the photo, something the Chinese masters would not have seen back in The Day.

chinese acrobats wide.jpg

This is a photo I took in the Summer of 1983 in Shanghai, China of Chinese acrobats.  This is an example of my mind's eye taking a better picture than I actually did.  I was hampered by low lighting, no flash, manual focus, a slow lens, and probably 100 ASA speed Ektachrome slide film.  In my mind, the action is stopped cold and is tack sharp.  The resulting photo is not quite that way.  Also, I'm not sure if I like the composition or not.  I think it accurately conveys the controlled chaos on the stage; others might think it is too busy.  I think my skills as a photographer have increased in the ensuing 23 years; certainly my camera gear has improved, if nothing else.  Nonetheless, the photo brings back fond memories of a wonderful summer evening in Shanghai.

shanghai toddler fixed.jpg

This Chinese boy was at the daycare center next to the Foreign Experts Residence at East China Normal University in Shanghai, which I attended in the Summer of 1983.  I think he looks like a happy camper.

great wall rush hour.jpg

I took this photo in August 1983 while I was studying and traveling in China.  This is a traffic jam at one of the turrets on the Great Wall of China.  It figures the guy going the wrong way through the throng is a Westerner.  I also like the gal with the enormous white hat in the lower 1/2 of the frame.

great wall blowin' chunks vert.jpg

This is another photo from my archives from the Summer of 1983.  Is this Chinese fellow blowing chunks at the Great Wall of China?  It kind of looks that way.  However, I think he was merely looking through the space in the Great Wall to look at the ground below.  I thought it was funny 23 years ago when I took the photo and I still think it is funny.

shanghai old man go vertical.jpg

This is another from the archives.  This is a photo of an old Chinese gentleman playing the game of Go in a park in Shanghai in the Summer of 1983.  Notice the "Mao suits" that everyone is wearing.  That's probably no longer the case in modern China.

The photo is another of my favorites for several reasons.  First, I enjoyed going to school in Shanghai.  Second, I like the fact that a board game would get such rapt attention from people in a park.  Third, I like the composition, with everyone looking down at the board.  And fourth, I like the evening lighting and the play of the shadows.

shanghai girls balancing.jpg

This photo dips into my archive and was originally shot on Ektachrome slide film.  The shot is of a group of young Chinese girls who liked to play in the front lawn of the Foreign Expert's Residence at East China Normal University in Shanghai.  I attended a program on Chinese language and law there in 1983, just at the end of Gang of Four and the opening of China to the West.  I like the contrast of the two girls on the left who look like they are going to fall over backwards and the two on the right who look rock steady.
