zamboni cropped.jpg

Face it guys.  You wanna drive the Zamboni.  You know you do.  Just ask the Gear Daddies.

I took this photo at a Sioux Falls Stampede hockey game three or four years ago at the Sioux Falls Arena.

And yes, I too wanna drive the Zamboni.

basketball swoosh cropoped.jpg

I wish I could tell you I meant for this photo to turn out this way, but that would not be the truth.  Typically in my sports photography, I'm trying to stop the action as sharply as possible, not blur it.  I get enough unintentional blur as it is from poorly lit gyms and too weak of a flash unit on my camera.

But I think in this photo, the blur works pretty well.  My daughter Sarah, the maroon gal in the middle, is mostly stopped and waiting to receive the just thrown basketball from an unseen teammate.  Meanwhile, the other players swirl around her playing defense.  I think it captures the critical moment of the ball being thrown and the controlled chaos that is basketball.  I believe I took the photo in 2005 and it is of a C game between Harrisburg and Sioux Falls Christian.

sarah boxing out fixed.jpg

If I had a nickel for every time I have yelled "box out!" as a basketball coach, I would be a very rich man.  Fortunately, in this freshman high school game featuring Harrisburg against Sioux Falls Lincoln, my daughter Sarah, in white, executes the perfect box out on the Lincoln player during a missed free throw.  Good girl, Sarah, you got her on your back!  I'm also happy the referee is NOT looking my daughter's way.

matt battle for ball sc 05 fixed.jpg

This is a photo of my son Matt last year in a club soccer tournament in S. Sioux City, NE against a team from Vermillion, SD.  I like that I caught the impasse between him and the other player.  I don't know if Matt was dribbling down the field and the Vermillion player (in black) came up to play defense or if they were trying to each win a 50-50 ball.  Anyway, it shows the intensity of the game, even when the little guys play it.

corner kick away cropped.jpg

I took this photo last year at my son Matt's U10 club team tournament in Council Bluffs, IA.  I think I hit the critical moment in the corner kick.  Will the ball be in or out?  Will there be a play on the goal?  Everyone is watching and anticipating.

sarah bench vert 2.jpgThis is a painful but poignant photo for me of my daughter Sarah sitting on the bench last year during a freshman high school basketball game.  I can tell she is very unhappy that she is not in the game.  I know the feeling, as I spent a lot of my basketball career sitting next to the coach rather than on the floor where I wanted to be.  But this is as much a part of sports as hitting the winning basket at the buzzer--maybe even more so.

Yeah, I wish it were a little sharper but I think it still works.

Ben can freeze time and gravity!

This is a photo of Ben Deetz of Sioux Falls from a U10 club soccer game in Council Bluffs, IA in 2005.  Ben is one of my son Matt's best friends.  To me, Ben looks like a soccer wizzard in this photo.

March 6, 2006

This is a photo of Emma Johnson (Harrisburg, right) and a player from Deuel in a freshman girls basketball tournament in January 2005 in Dell Rapids.  I coached Emma and my daughter Sarah from second through eighth grades.  I particularly like the direction and intensity of Emma's and the other girl's eyes and their arms touching in preparation for a tussle over a rebound during a free throw.
