syrian fruit cart fixed.jpg

This is a street scene in Damascus, Syria that I took in November 2003.  I like the modern advertisement that seemingly looks down on the tricycle fruit cart.  Just a nice juxtaposition of old in new that you often find in the Middle East.

cham table fixed.jpg

I'm not much into furniture (no microprocessor or batteries involved), but this beautiful mother of pearl inlaid octagonal table in the lobby of the Damascus, Syria Cham Palace Hotel caught my eye.  Doubt if you can pick this up at S.D. Furniture Mart in Sioux Falls.  Photo taken November 2003.

syrian cloth dudes.jpg

These Damascus, Syrian cloth merchants had a little store in a small shopping center across from my hotel.  Their shop was about ten by ten feet and absolutely packed with the tightly packaged (but beautiful) Damask fabrics you see behind them.  They also sold water pipes (which I also bought but haven't used), ties, and paintings.

The boy was a nephew to the man in the foreground, who bossed him around like crazy.

The cloth dudes were very friendly and good salesmen.  I thought this photo captured their good cheer and their close surroundings.  Photo taken in November 2003.

syrian gate.jpg

This photo is more of a photo of an oddity than a great photo.  It is a photo I took of a gate into Damascus, Syria in November 2003.  The cameo is of Syria's late President Hafez al-Assad.  I thought the gate bore a striking resemblance to the Mayor Dave Munson gate in Sioux Falls at the entrance to Phillips-to-the-Falls.

syrian old man fixed.jpg

This is one of my all time favorite photos.  I took it in November 2003 while driving to the outskirts of Damascus, Syria.  It is literally a grab shot while stopped in traffic.

The photo probably violates the rules of good composition because of all the elements in it.  However, I think it works.  The bicycle shop has great symmetry to it, with he square doors and windows offset by the four sets of tires making a diamond.  The old man is completely at ease and has a great hat on.  The torn poster ads some character.  The plants add an attempt at adding some beauty to a rather bleak street scene.  But then again, I'm biased, as I was on a great trip in a great ancient city.

big load syria.jpg

I shot this completely overloaded mini-truck on the highway into Damascus, Syria from the outskirts in November 2003.  I'm surprised the mini-truck just didn't topple over.

March 15

This is a shot of Damascus, Syria from about the tenth floor of my downtown hotel in November 2003.  I like the contrasts of old and modern, secular and religious, green and tan, clouds and clear sky.

March 5, 2006

Today's "Photo of the Day" is a photo I took at a Crusader's era church and monastery outside of Damascus, Syria in November 2003.  The young Syrian women were playing tourist just like me.  What I think the photo shows is that even in this predominately Muslim nation, it treats its women like equals.  Further, I think Syrians and Americans have far more in common than not and would be great friends if both governments weren't so stupid.
