- On October 20, 1857, former S.D. Governor Charles N. Herreid (R) was born. He served from 1901 to 1905. He also got a town named after himself.

- On October 20, 1982, famed Crazy Horse Sculptor Korzak Ziolowski died. He is buried in the family vault that he and his sons carved. His epitaph:
KORCZAK
Storyteller in Stone
May His Remains Be Left Unknown
