Argus Leader: Thanks but No Thanks--FEMA Passes on S.D., Other States
From today's Argus:
No group of evacuees headed to S.D.
Between 75 and 100 evacuees from regions ravaged by Hurricane Katrina have come by cars and buses to South Dakota, but no planeload is likely anytime soon, if at all. Gov. Mike Rounds announced Monday that no group of evacuees will arrive in the near future. The Federal Emergency Management Agency alerted the governor that flights to all states have been suspended. "I want to thank the citizens of South Dakota that have so generously offered their time, assistance and cooperation as we planned to receive evacuees," Rounds said. "I am especially appreciative of the efforts of the nonprofit organizations that stepped up to join local and state government agencies."
