S.D. Public Ed. Radio TV Online Broadcasting: Gov. Rounds--"Whatever, I Do What I Want!"
VERMILLION, SD (SDPERTVOB)--During an appearance on SDPERTVOB's "South Dakota Focus" Tuesday, South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds momentarily turned into Eric Cartman from Comedy Central's "South Park" cartoon.
"It was the strangest thing," said program host Chick Buck. "After about the third time I asked him if it was right for him to fly state airplanes to solely family and political events, I swear to God he momentarily turned into Cartman from the "Maury Show" episode, and kept repeating, "Whatever, I do what I want!" It was quite a moment."
While the program was broadcast on radio and no video exists, an audio transcript of the program reveals that Gov. Rounds did say on at least nine occasions, in Eric Cartman's voice, "Whatever, I do what I want."
"The "I do what I want" comments didn't bother me so much," Buck said. "However, when Gov. Rounds kept saying, "Respect my authority!" over and over as Cartman, I finally thought I needed to back off. I mean, he is sort of my boss."
The Governor's office could not be reached for comment and all inquiries were referred to the producers of "South Park."
Democratic State Party Chairperson Dodie Nelson Dowrumple said it was not proper for the Govenor to turn into a cartoon character without legislative approval.
"We will ask our very nice Governor if he would pretty please ask the legislature to change from a person into a cartoon on public radio next time before he does so," Dowrumple said. "Oh, and him flying to family stuff at taxpayer expense, that's not such a good idea. Please Mike, don't do that anymore, ok?"
