Whatever Happened to Bowling on TV?

ABC Sports bowlmeister, the late, great Chris Schenkel.
ESPN Classic is broadcasting some 1970s bowling tournament that originally aired on ABC Sports.  Lots of bushy sideburns, plaid pants, and polyester shirts with big collars.  Oh, and broadcasting great Chris Schenkel with the call.

Whatever happened to bowling's popularity?101944-239542-thumbnail.jpg
Nice shoes!

It used to be a staple of weekend sports broadcasting.  Even locally, KCAU and KELO broadcast "The Big Bowl" from Sioux City, featuring broadcast legends Gene Sherman and Dave Dedrick (aka Capt. 11).  Tipsy bowlers, cheesy graphics, and small purses.  And we couldn't help but watch.101944-235920-thumbnail.jpg
S.D. broadcasting legend Dave Dedrick added bowling announcer to his Captain 11 and weatherman duties at KELO-TV in the 1960s and 70s.

Today, bowling is on ESPN 2 once in a while and never on local TV.  You have to love a sport where you can rent shoes that hundreds of other people have worn before you.
