SDW Exclusive: Rep. Roger Hunt Playing Fast With Abortion Contributions?

KSFY-TV will have more on this at 6 p.m. tonight, but here is a release that they and presumably other media received from Steve Hildebrand concerning Rep. Roger Hunt's set up of a dummy corporation to funnel contributions to support Referred Law 6, the abortion ban he helped to author.

Read the release below then watch KSFY for more details and Hunt's response:

Vote Yes For Life Uses Shell Company to Launder $750,000 Dollars

Six weeks ago, State Representative Roger Hunt, author of South Dakota’s controversial ban, registered a fake company called “Promising Future, Inc” in Brandon, South Dakota. The “company” has no telephone number, no office, no business presence in the state, and appears to offer no products or services. Yet it’s been a profitable business. In fact, in the six weeks since it was founded, it has produced enough “profit” to donate $750,000 – three quarters of a million dollars – to Vote Yes for Life [Vote Yes for Life Ballot Committee Filing ($500,000 on the general election report, $250,000 on the 11/02/06 Supplement, South Dakota Secretary of State; Corporations Filing, South Dakota Secretary of State].

Vote Yes for Life has repeatedly been criticized for lying about the nature of the ban, falsely claiming that the ban contains exceptions for rape and incest. Now, incredibly, they have a sleazy politician laundering campaign contributions through a fake company. Vote Yes for Life is running the most disingenuous campaign in the history of South Dakota.

FACT: On September 14, 2006 Roger Hunt forms “Promising Future, Inc.”

According to their official filing with the Secretary of State’s Office, “Promising Future, Inc.” was founded on September 14, 2006. State Representative Roger Hunt is listed as the sole director. No telephone number is provided.

FACT: “Promising Future, Inc.” is not listed in the telephone book, and has no listing with directory assistance.

Attempts to reach “Promising Future, Inc.” via the telephone book, and via directory assistance yielded no listing for “Promising Future, Inc.”

FACT: “Promising Future, Inc.” does not have a place of business.

There is no business listing for “Promising Future, Inc” in South Dakota. The address listed on Representative Hunt’s filing is actually Roger Hunt’s law office (1320 Rushmore Dr # 108 Brandon, SD)

FACT: “Promising Future, Inc.” generates $750,000 in less than seven weeks which it donates to Vote Yes for Life

Vote Yes for Life reported three $250,000 contributions (totaling three quarters of a million dollars) from the sham “company” in their filing to the South Dakota Secretary of State. Two of those contributions were listed on the pre-general filing, and one was listed on the November 2, 2006 supplemental report. [Vote Yes for Life Campaign Filings].

FACT: South Dakota law requires disclosure by Political Action Committees used to fund political activity.

South Dakota Codified Law requires all political action committees to register with the Secretary of State’s Office and to report all contributions for public review. “Promising Future Inc.” has not reported any of its contributors to the Secretary of State’s Office.

FACT: South Dakotans deserve to know who is funding political campaigns in South Dakota.

Our laws are designed to give voters a clear understanding of who is donating to campaigns in South Dakota. “Promising Future Inc.” was designed to hide the nature of Vote Yes for Life’s political donors.

FACT: “Promising Future, Inc.” is a sham company set up to avoid South Dakota’s political reporting requirements, and to allow anonymous political contributions to be funneled to Vote Yes for Life.

How can a business with no place of business, no telephone, no business activity, and no products or services magically earn enough money – in six weeks – to contribute $750,000 to a political campaign? How ironic is it that the only person publicly affiliated with the business is the elected official who authored the controversial abortion ban? Most importantly, what are they trying to hide from the people of South Dakota?

Questions for Roger Hunt, “Director” of “Promising Future, Inc.”

Where did “Promising Future, Inc.” receive the $750,000 that it funneled to Vote Yes for Life?

What products or services does “Promising Future, Inc.” offer in South Dakota?

How was “Promising Future, Inc.” able to earn $750,000 in six weeks – from the time of it’s founding to the day the report was filed?

What role does State Representative Roger Hunt have with “Promising Future, Inc.?”

Will “Promising Future, Inc.” pay federal income taxes on its “earnings?”

Forward South Dakota, the proponent of initiated measure 7, video lottery, has done the same thing. They have reported all contributions from South Dakota Association which is not on file anywhere.

These guys have consistenly lied about the rape, incest and health exceptions, and now they're trying to hide where they're money is coming from. They will stoop to any level.

As an aside -- How can this be an "exclusive" if you got it from a press release written by someone else? Just curious.

I assume that Roger will report this on his income tax return. I also assume the SD Deparment of Revenue will investigate to make sure no sales tax is needed.
