Volesky Concedes; Some Thoughts on the SDDP

The Argus Leader reports on its blog that Ron Volesky, Democratic candidate for Attorney General, has already conceded, with the polls yet to close.  Read: Volesky concedes before polls close

Ron congratulated incumbent Republican Larry Long on running a good campaign then took a shot at the state Democratic party for not funding him--apparently, at all.

Ron did not run much of a campaign but he was a brave and loyal Democrat who stepped forward to take the nomination.  He is a spell-binding speaker and one of the smartest and most passionate people you'll meet.

My party, the S.D. Democratic Party, needs to look hard at its leadership and its approach.  I'm not sure what else Jack Billion received from the party after my departure, but prior to mid-September, it was a pittance.  You can't win if you don't fund your candidates and provide meaningful support.  I can't blame Ron for being bitter.

If Democrats make gains tonight, it will be because of Jack Billion's work as a party chair in Minnehaha County and Justin Lena's work in Pennington County and Deb Knecht's in Brown County (among a few key names).  It will be because of great candidates like Scott Heidepriem, Tom Katus, Sandy Jerstad, Suzy Blake, Marc Feinstein, and others who worked like dogs to win.  It will be because of groups like Democracy in Action and Grassroots South Dakota.  It will be because the S.D. Campaign for Healthy Families turned out the "right" voters on the abortion measure.

The state party will take credit if there is success tonight.  And sure, they helped.  But don't be fooled.

Nationwide the Democrats have to get candidates that have some fire in them. We need candidates that speak more like Clinton, with some feeling and emphasis. Most of the candidates on both sides have voices that sound like GW and Rounds.
