And The Lessons of Dan Sutton Have Been. . . Not Learned

I just spoke with a very reliable source in Pierre who says it seems legislative life in Pierre has not changed one iota, despite all the attention on Sen. Dan Sutton and his scandal.

My source, who is very familiar with Pierre’s inner workings and what goes on during the session, says the fraternity-like atmosphere of some legislators toward pages and interns of the opposite sex is as rampant as ever.

So much for Dan being a wake-up call for more professional behavior from some of our playboy/horn-dog legislators in Pierre.

Just another thing that makes you want to go “hmmmm.” I don’t think I’ll be letting any of my kids be pages or interns until there are clear rules in place for the ADULTS in how to act toward their younger charges.

Geez!

I have relatives who have been both pages and interns in Pierre, and they have said the same thing. "What happens in Pierre stays in Pierre." And that we can't begin to realize how some people act out there. Just who are we electing to send to Pierre, and why do they get away with this? Why doesn't some reporter get in there and get the scoop on all the Peyton Place activities obviously happening. Might help the electorate decide who to return to Pierre and who to show the door at the next election. Maybe that's why not much seems to get done with some major issues until the last day!

Do people laugh a little more in Pierre? Yes: being around people with the hutzpah to run for office in a town where everyone is interested in important issues tends to make life a little more stimulating than the local coffee shop. Is it like your annual Christmas party for 40 nights in a row? For some, probably the same percentage as celebrate a bit too much at home; after all, the lobbyists are doing their best to make you feel good and like them. But you are smearing a lot of good people who are sacrificing their family time and businesses at home with a very broad messy brush. Shame on you. You should not be using your blog to attribute anecdotal events to the body as a whole. It does a disservice to your loyal readers who do not frequent Pierre and don’t know any better than to swallow the impression that you give, and that impression is not correct.
