I have obtained information from a reliable source who has proved accurate in the past that this past weekend, approximately 70 of South Dakota’s anti-choice “leaders” attended a summit at the Community Bible Church in Pierre to plan their next attack on abortion rights in South Dakota.
While there does not appear to be a consensus on the “best” direction to go to further restrict abortions in South Dakota, the latest plan is for anti-choice forces to initiate an abortion ban with exceptions for rape and incest and a “narrow health exception” for health of the mother.
The best news is that
Leslee Unruh, who took over the movement in the 2006 referral campaign, appears to be leading the charge for the initiated measure. I cannot think of a better person to represent the extremist position of the anti-choicers—and someone prone to just plain silliness in the political realm.
My source tells me that S.D. Right to Life and Focus on the Family oppose the approach and that the Catholic Church, Concerned Women for America, and the Family Policy Council are currently neutral on the approach.
It’s always nice to see your opponents divided.
Anti-choice advocates Matt McCaulley and Rep. Roger Hunt were supposedly in attendance as was anti-choice attorney
Harold Cassidy.Obviously, it is still a bit early to see what might be happening in the anti-choice camp, but one thing is certain. Keep an eye on them.
I say if Leslee wants to bring her crazy train back into the station, that can only help Democrats, moderate Republicans, independents, Libertarians and people who think for themselves in the 2008 South Dakota general election.
