Breaking: All Mourn for PP-- Mighty Fred Thompson Has Struck Out

My friend Pat Powers at SD War College must be sad this afternoon.

PP Hearted Fred!

Republican Presidential candidate/thespian Fred Thompson has bowed out of the race.

More from the Wall Street Journal:

Fred Thompson dropped out of the Republican presidential race thisafternoon after a third-place finish over the weekend in SouthCarolina’s primary and poor performances in other early caucus andprimary states. The former Tennessee senator did not say whether hewould endorse any of his rivals.

Thompson’s departure leavesbehind a still-crowded Republican field, with John McCain, Mitt Romney,Rudy Giuliani and Mike Huckabee battling for the lead in Florida aheadof that state’s Jan. 29 primary.

And since Executive Assistant States Attorney Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston) has replaced Fred’s State Attorney character Arthur Branch on NBC’s Law and Order, it looks like Fred’s out of a job there too.

Gosh, remember those halcyon days when Fred was the big, sleepy-eyed, harumphing knight on a white horse who was going to save the Presidency for the Republicans.  I do.  Good times, good times.

Bye Fred!  See you on re-runs!
