In my regional blog aggregator at right, I try to aggregate as many South Dakota related blogs as I can.
Typically, the big boys and girls like South Dakota War College, South Dakota Politics, Hog House, Progressive on the Prairie, Dakota Women, Sibby Online, Madville Times, Dakota Today, and Dakota Voice dominate the feed. They post often and have sizeable, at least by South Dakota standards, readerships.
But after going on a bit of a lark and mining through Technorati over the New Years Holiday, I found a whole host of other South Dakota blogs you may not have heard of. Here’s the full list, with my favorite “finds” highlighted:
Cycle South Dakota
http://cyclesd.blogspot.com/
A very well-written and in the know blog about bicycling in the Sioux Falls area and South Dakota. The dude even teaches you how to make your own studded bike tires for winter bicycling fun. My favorite headline, however is The Slenderness of Danish Cycling Women
Deadwood South Dakota Blog
http://deadwood-sd.blogspot.com/
This blog is close to my heart as they keep up with not only things in Deadwood but the comings and goings of the actors who appeared in HBO’s series, Deadwood.
VFW Webcom
http://vfwwebcom.org/rss.php?w=southdakota
Even the old WWII and Korean War veterans know how to use technology to keep their members informed.
Thunder Butte
http://thunderbutte.blogspot.com/
Having spent some time West River in butte country in north central South Dakota, I was intrigued by this blog about the history of Thunder Butte. It is well written and you don’t have to know a thing about the area or the history to find it a good read.
Mrs. South Dakota
http://mrssouthdakota.blogspot.com/
I actually liked this blog a lot. This lady shows her family life and competition life in the senior circuit of beauty pageants.
South Dakota Kayak
http://southdakotakayak.blogspot.com/
This blog is similar to Cycle South Dakota but about kayaking around the state. I have actually kayaked but not in South Dakota though close—down a portion of the Niobrara River in north central Nebraska. I never guessed there was so much interest in kayaking in the state as I’ve never seen on a waterway in the state and I’m a river rat from Yankton. It’s well worth your time.
Rethink Rural Housing
http://feeds.feedburner.com/RethinkRuralHousing
This was the most intriguing blog with the most “upside” potential. It has good ideas for more affordable housing in our smaller communities. It could have tremendous influence.
South Dakota Woodcarvers
http://sdwoodcarvers.blogspot.com/
This was one of the most enjoyable sites filled with really cool stuff made out of—yes, you guessed it—wood.
Mitchell Reviews
http://www.mitchellsdreviews.com/
This might be the best idea for a blog with the least material to work with. The dude is setting out to do reviews of restaurants and so forth in Mitchell. Once he gets past Chef Louies and the Arby’s, he’s going to have to head down the Interstate one way or the other for more material. However, I think a blog like this in Sioux Falls or Rapid City could be very popular.
This Unmanageable Life
http://thisunmanageablelife.com/
This blog is an unblinking look at life from a recovering alcoholic.
