Watching HBO's Deadwood a Reminder of Lost Greatness

Mrs./Dr. South Dakota Watch and I happened upon an episode of Deadwood on HBO HD this evening.

It was painful to watch, not because the show was so bad but because it was so good.  Acting, writing, art directions, cinematography, about South Dakota history, everything.  Then executive producer and creator David Milch threw it all away for the waste of celluloid was John from Cincinnati, which lasted one dismal season.

Deadwood was the Shakespeare of our time, or perhaps, more accurately, the unfinished Shakespeare of our time.

What a loss.

Why do so many people just assume that Milch dropped Deadwood for John? I'm a huge fan of both shows, but I understand how people could dislike John. What I don't understand is why people are always slagging Milch for Deadwood's disappearance. All it takes is some cursory googling to learn that David Milch was extremely upset when HBO pulled the plug on Deadwood.

I'd suggest reading Jim Beaver's (Ellsworth on Deadwood, Vietnam Joe on John) response to another blogger who made this mistake: http://blog.jopinionated.com/2007/08/22/exclusive-deadwoodjohn-from-cincinnati-actor-jim-beaver-responds.aspx

I disagree with John being a "waste of celluloid" (even beyond that being, I'd guess, technically incorrect.) But if you like a show so much, and it's suddenly cancelled, why would you just assume that its creator up and decided to kill it? Especially when said show is critically acclaimed and building momentously toward its final season? Especially a blogger -- why not do a simple search online as to why it was cancelled? I'd probably do the search, but even if I didn't, my first assumption would be that the network cancelled the show, not the creator.

As I'm sure you're aware "The Wire" was the only thing to rival (and best) Deadwood on HBO or anywhere on TV in the last 10 years. If you havn't............Watch it. I'll loan them to you.

Indeed. A shame they threw it away - best show ever. And I hear the new creation from Milch - Last of the Ninth - didn't even get the green light from HBO. Milch is languishing and HBO can sit on a dong.
