Denise Ross Has Major Article on SD's Abortion Debate in The New Republic
My friend Denise Ross has an interesting analysis piece on South Dakota’s two recent abortion ballot fights in the most recent edition of The New Republic.
An excerpt:
But after two defeats at the ballot box, the conservative Republican (legislator Larry Rhoden) is ready to throw in the towel. “I would question the wisdom of anybody that wanted to bring it forward again,” says Rhoden, who makes his living as a rancher in the sparsely populated western corner of the state. His personal view on abortion hasn’t changed, but as a policy-maker, Rhoden makes it plain that he wants no part of any more abortion bans. How did South Dakota—a state frequently described as “the most pro-life in the country”—become such hostile terrain for anti-abortion efforts?
I hope you read her thoughtful look at our state’s abortion battles. And you go girl Denise on getting published in a major political journal!

Thanks, Todd.
I never knew SD had a western "corner" until The New Republic's editors opened my eyes! Whatta ya gonna do? There were a few of those in there, but overall the rigorous editing process was good.
I sincerely hope some academic or think tank tries to figure out what happened in South Dakota when it comes to attitudes re: abortion.
Denise:
Maybe "edge" would be a better term? Congratulations. Now buy all us pajamistas a beer with all the money you got for writing the article! ;)

Denise,
Don't underestimate the damage that Leslee Unruh did to her own cause. She comes across as a crazy lady and I met a lot of people that voted no just because they didn't like her or were turned off by her.
