Hyperion the Invisible?
I was talking to a fellow University of Houston Law Center LL.M. grad and buddy of mine who has spent a large chunk of his life in the oil business in Texas, first as a "land man" for Standard Oil in the 1970s and 80s and later as an oil and gas attorney in Victoria, Ft. Worth, and now Houston, Texas.I asked him if he had ever heard of Hyperion, the company that may build a refinery near Elk Point.
His answer: No.
He did say there are a lot of oil companies, drillers, etc. in Texas that he hasn't heard of and that some big companies operate under names even he might not recognize.
But don't you find it just a bit odd that someone well-versed in the oil business in Texas has never heard of Hyperion?
Just something else that makes you want to go "hmmmm" about the project.

I used to live in oil country and can tell you that it doesn't take a large company to get a big operation started. All they need is a plan and a sugar-daddy (or several). They don't get to be very big until they've actually built a facility or drilled some wells. Most everything is sub-contracted out to builders, drillers, pipe-layers, etc. It's a pretty fluid industry, for the most part (no pun intended).
Got to tell you, after reviewing their web site it looks as if they are better qualified to drill or refine oil than you are to write. Nothing personal.
OldSarge:
Hyperion and I have both refined the same amount of oil as of today: 0 barrels.
Nothing personal.

If you are thinking about going in to the "refining" business..... I vote NO for the skippy oil company.
1. where is the oil coming from
2. how is the refined product getting out
3. where is the money coming from? hyperions net worth is $31 million.
4. why south dakota
1. Canada, and in the future, North Dakota
2. Wheeled vehicles known by some as trucks, and known to others as Lorrys.
3. All they have to do is get a few other billionaire oilmen together and thy have plenty. The investors won't show up until it's nearly a done deal.
4. Because they figure we'll let them. And, besides, Texans aren't very good at geography (at least the geography of states other than Texas). They probably thing we're right next door to Canada.
