Clinton Campaign Offered SD State Democratic Party Fundraiser in Exchange for Two Superdelegates
That's about all I can say. In a heated exchange at tonight's S.D. Democratic Executive Board meeting in Oacoma, Hillary Clinton delegate Malcolm Chapman said--and State Chair Jack Billion confirmed--that the Clinton campaign offered a major fundraiser to the state party in exchange for two superdelegate votes.
Chapman noted that he had almost "cut the deal" with the Clinton campaign. Billion said the price was "too high." He also said non-office holding superdelegates like him had to give a lot of consideration to Sen. Tom Daschle's, Sen. Tim Johnson's, and Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin's position on the race as they are major financial benefactors to the local party.
I'll post more as I learn more.

As a MAJOR contributor to the SD Democratic party, I'm pissed. Please pass that along Todd.
Sharon – why are you upset that our party officials can’t be bought off?
Our state party is in significant debt and because of such, we are unable to support strong Democratic candidates running for the state legislature. It'd be a shame for us to pass up such a unique fundraising opportunity sponsored by Senator Clinton. And anyway, isn't it logical that the superdelegates reflect the will of the voters of the state?
I honestly think it's time to put the superdelegate thing, and just about everything that happened this year behind us for now. There is a meeting scheduled in September in Rapid City (Sept 6) that those that want to talk about the superdelegate process will be welcome to discuss then.
In the meantime I hope we can move on for now. I have two reasons we need to focus on resoundingly defeating John McCain:
Supreme Court.
And two reasons to put it all behind us for now in-state:
Marion Rounds.

No..that is NOT how the superdelegate system is set up. These are people who have a voice in the election process because of thier official position. However, they are just one vote...just like the elected delegates. And they are free to use their vote as they see fit. They are no more obligated to vote for who the state favors than you are when you go to the ballot box. It is unbelievably arrogant to think that how you vote should affect how someone else votes.
And I'm surprised that no one has stated anything about the obvious here. If they are offering us a fund-raiser for 2 super delegates, what are they offering all the other states. This stinks to high heaven of an attempted high-jacking of the nomination process at the National Convention. And no matter which candidate you support, you should be outraged that all the primaries and caucuses could come to naught, just because of back room deals like this one.
I for one am disgusted with the Clinton camp for even suggesting such a deal.
It now seems like 2 SD's would have been a small price to pay for a coupe hundred thousand in the bank to fund the party. How's it going with Tim and Steph funding the party?
By the way- why do both parties hide their conventions in Chamberlain out of the media spotlight?
Also is there a PUC candidate yet?
I have to agree pretty much with "SDPunkMom". It also seems to me that such an offer by Clinton might approach something actually illegal as well as being ethically reprehensible.
"Vanna, I'll buy a superdelegate. Spin the wheel." OHHHHH NNNO "Bankruptcy".
Perhaps if the SD Democratic Party would produce some information and ideas that could be presented to Democrats rather than every message and letter being a "Send money now." missive, there might actually be more support.
HOWEVER, the party primaries are not like general elections. The run mostly under the rules of the party involved. The SuperDelegate idea may have problems and proportional representation may as well, but they are not nearly as major distortion of citizen desires as are "winner take all" primary elections.
Holy hijinks! Is this just a misunderstanding, or treachery on Unity day, as Denise suggests? Todd, we wait with bated breath. Put down the free brats and give us more!
Whoops...just read Todd's note.....this was prior to the primary. As Emily Latella used to say - "Never mind".

When the platform is posted, I strongly suggest you take a look at it Doug. We worked hard to be very clear about what our values are.
I suspect you will be pleased when you read a resolution calling for redeployment from Iraq that passed with not even *one* nay vote. It's a great platform and I predict you'll see a lot of its ideas talked about in the coming months.
As for asking for money, we'll be doing that too. Money wins elections, and anyone who agrees with our values as expressed in our platform will be urged to contribute money if they can. However, as Stan's experience in the 2004 and 2006 primaries points out, money isn't all that is needed. We are organizing all over the state, and our candidates and parties, need support of all kinds for our candidates. There are as many ways to help as there are supporters.
