Lies, Damned Lies, and BNN Influence Rankings

Some of my colleagues are crowing about their rankings in the Blog Net News Influence rankings.

To which I say, “Congratulations.”

But also, be a little skeptical.

For example, over in the Kansas blogosphere, my three week old blog, Kansas Watch, is the second most influential blog according to BNN.

While I’ll gladly take a “W” whenever I can, there are some very good and very well established Kansas blogs that I would have to think have more “influence” than my new entry.

Also, while recent crowers are looking at the latest weekly chart, BNN’s 12 Week Chart tells a different story:

South Dakota Watch remains in the top 5, which is pretty respectable. But surprisingly, the Rapid City Journal’s Mount Blogmore falls to 10th. I have to believe a well read and well written political blog from a major state newspaper has more influence than most of us put together.

Also, South Dakota Politics is completely missing from the list. They have a relatively high Technorati rank and in my opinion, drive a lot of the discussion in the local blogosphere with its conservative though intelligent commentary.

Plus, none of our KELOLAND blogs or Hemmingsen’s or Lund’s blogs on KELOLAND which get huge numbers are included in the rankings.

Thus is the fun of BNN’s “algorithm of influence.” It’s kind of like debating who the best QB in the NFL is or who the prettiest girl is at the dance.

And I doubt most of our readers care. But like I said, a win’s a win when it comes from an independent third party source. At the least, it gives us all something to write about for a day or two.

Todd -

I wish I had the faintest idea of how their ranking works. I'm convinced that if you sustain a position, they penalize you for that just to mix it up.

Otherwise, I'm jealous at your KELO rank. Maybe I should actually start posting there on more than an occasional basis.

Pat:

I think BNN has a "secret algorithm sauce" they use. Kind of like the Colonel's secret recipe for KFC.

The nice thing is that the rankings are so mixed up, we all can brag about something.

I don't understand how I can blog for three plus years in my home state of SD yet blog for three weeks in Kansas and be higher rated in Kansas than South Dakota. Go figure.

Todd, not sure how influential Blogmore is anymore since most of their big guns left but other than stroking our ego's who cares what BNN's supersecret algorithm rates us? While I get a few hits from them, they are nowhere near my top referrer and that is what matters.

Bob:

Indeed. BNN is not a major referral source for SD Watch but it is slightly more important to Kansas Watch. So, maybe BNN's influence is not high?
