If It's Good Enough for John Edwards It's Good Enough for Sarah Palin

The National Enquirer reports today (damn, it’s hard for me to write those words), that Gov. Sarah Palin tried to keep daughter Bristol’s pregnancy a secret until her daughter and her daughter’s babydaddy were married after the GOP convention.

An excerpt:
Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin attempted to quietly have her daughter Bristol get married before news of her pregnancy leaked out, the NATIONAL ENQUIRER is reporting exclusively in its new issue.

Palin planned for the wedding to take place right after the Republican National Convention and then she was going to announce the pregnancy….

And no whining about it being the National Enquirer, my young Republican friends. You took their reporting and ran when they broke the John Edwards affair.

Bill Earley, Lost in the Legislative Excitement

Remember Sen. Bill Earley’s narrow loss to now Sen. Sandy Jerstad? Remember how we thought there was going to be a lawsuit or a dispute over sitting Sandy?

Didn’t happen.

Bill went softly into the good night. Thankfully.

I guess he was not able to prove fraud. What happened in Sioux Falls with the ballot mix up was just a boneheaded mistake but not fraud. Plus, he would have to have gotten almost all of those “lost” votes.

Since last week was the first week of the S.D. Legislature and everyone had Sutton-mania, this kind of got lost in the news coverage.

Aren’t you glad you’ve got me around to point these things out?!

Jessica Nathanson Explains It All

In the comments, someone who purports to be Augustana professor and Democratic legislative candidate Jessica Nathanson explains her "marriage is ownership" quote.  The link: http://thunewatch.squarespace.com/sdwatch/2006/4/20/sd-politics-unintended-irony.html#comments

The problem with situations like this--a possible misquoting in a newspaper--is that it is difficult to dispel and correct.  In a campaign in particular, things like this take on a life of their own.  Believe it or not, sometimes the press makes mistakes and then the candidate or even a citizen has to bear the consequences.  And sometimes even the smartest of us say dumb things.  (As a married man of 25 years, boy, have I said some REALLY dumb things I regret.)

Jessica, my advice is to issue a press release NOW, clarifying your statement.  Getting tagged with the statement will dog you though the entire campaign unless you take affirmative steps.

Julie Bartling, Do You Know Where You Live?

101944-299009-thumbnail.jpg
Where's Julie?
A reader wonders if Democrat anti-choice State Senator Julie Bartling is circulating petitions in the right district:

Todd, do you know how people are circulating petitions in these "new" districts?

I see Julie Bartling still listed in District 21 but she lives in Burke, which is Gregory Co. and would be 26B.   District 21, her old, would have an open Senate seat w/out and incumbent then, wouldn't it?

I presume there aren't going to be any more court challenges and people should be circulating petitions according the newdistrict boundaries?

Thanks much.

Can anyone share any insights on this?
